มักจะได้พบหรือได้ยินกันบ่อยๆ กับคำว่า Contemporary Style ซึ่งดูเหมือนจะกว้างมากในการสื่อถึงการตกแต่งภายใน แต่ความจริงแล้วการตกแต่งแบบนี้ไม่ได้หมายความว่าจะเอาอะไรก็หลากหลายแบบมารวมกันอยู่ภายในห้อง แล้วเรียกว่า ContemporaryStyle

Contemporary Style คือการผสมผสานกันระหว่างรูปแบบของการตกแต่งและความร่วมสมัยของเฟอร์นิเจอร์ในยุคนั้น ซึ่งนำมาตกแต่งเข้าด้วยกันภายในห้องอย่างเหมาะสมและลงตัวในจังหวะการจัดวางและองค์ประกอบโดยรวมภายในห้อง อย่างที่กล่าวมาแล้วตอนต้นว่าที่เรามักจะพบเห็นบ่อยๆ หรือเรียกสรุปแบบนี้ เช่น Nodern Contemporary style, Chinese Contemporary style, Thai Contemporary style ซึ่งก็มีอีกมากที่เรามักพบเห็น

เพื่อความเข้าใจเบื้องต้นเกี่ยวกับแนวทางการตกแต่ง Thai Contemporary Style
ใน Living Room บนคอนโดมิเนียมซึ่งก็เป็นวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของคนเมืองในปัจจุบัน ถ้าย้อนไปในอดีต รูปแบบเฟอร์นิเจอร์ไทยมักจะมีแต่ตู้ทรงสอบแบบตู้พระธรรม มีหีบใส่ของที่สมัยก่อนใช้ใส่ทรัพย์สมบัติหรือใช้แทนกระเป๋าเดินทางมีตั่งซึ่งก็ใช้แทนเก้าอี้เฉพาะผู้มียศหรือเจ้านายเท่านั้นจึงจะมีสิทธินั่งได้ คนทั่วไปก็จะนั่งพื้นหรือมีเบาะรองนั่ง จวบจนได้รับอิทธิพลจากชาติตะวันตก ก็ได้มีการรับเอาวัฒนธรรมเข้ามาผสมกับความเป็นไทย จึงออกมาในรูปแบบของเก้าอี้นั่ง แต่มีขาเปา ขาคู้ และแกะลายไทย เป็นละเอียดที่นำมามาผสมกันจนเกิดเป็นงานชิ้นใหม่ขึ้น ซึ่งก็มาสามารถเรียกได้ว่า Contemporary หรือนำเอา pattern ของลายฝาปะกนบ้านไทยมาใช้กับงานผนังตกแต่งภายในห้อง การนำตั่งแบบจัตุรัสใช้เป็นโต๊ะกลาง หรือตู้โทรทัศน์ ที่ประยุกต์รูปทรงของตู้พระธรรมกับบานประตูลั่นดานของบ้านทรงไทย ซึ่งจะเห็นได้ว่ารูปแบบของเฟอร์นิเจอร์นั้นถูกนำเอาความเป็นไทยในส่วนต่างๆ มาผสมผสานกับในรูปแบบการใช้งานที่ตอบสนองวิถีชีวิตในปัจจุบัน แต่ยังแฝงกลิ่นอายไทยไว้ ซึ่งเรียกว่า Thai Contemporary Style

The word ‘Contemporary Style’ can be widely found and seemingly sounds vague about interior decoration style. The term does not cover everything or every single decoration style put together in one room. Actually, the style is as where the ways of decoration meet the modern style at the time. The decoration may need to have a very good skill to select pieces of furniture from everywhere in erery style and put them together in an attractive and appropriate way. We may come across the words; Modern Contemporary; Chinese Contemporary, thai Contemporary, etc. which can also refer to Contemporary style to a certain extent.

To give a clear understanding of Thai Contemporary style in case of living rooms, I would employ the living rooms as an example as it is part of the way of human life. Back to the past, Thai tradition furniture would have only one choice for cabinets n tapering cabinets; chests used as treasure conta iners or suitcases; stools where only the nobility could occupy while the prople sat at a lower level n on the floor. Until west ern culture arrived, the adaptation conseptation consequently occurred. As the results, we have had such pieces of furniture termed as Thai Contemporary style i.e. the Thai-style carved chairs with bendy legs; the patterns on wooden-plank panels used as wallpaper; a squars stools used as a coffee table;a TV cabinet which was adapted from Buddhist scripture cabinets and doors with a mortise loch.

The furniture in the this style therefore functions as modern-style furniture, yet conserves Thai traditional ways of life. It is undoubtedly called ’Thai Contemporary style’
