 Mediterranean style

Mediterranean ถือกำเนิดแถบยุโรปตอนใต้ เขตทะเลเมดิเตอร์เนียน ซึ่งในแถบนี้จะมีประเทศสเปน อิตาลี กรีซ ฝรั่งเศสตอนใต้ และยังมีอีกหลายประเทศ ซึ่งกลุ่มที่ได้รับอิทธิพลแบบเมดิเตอร์เนียนเข้าไปผสมผสาน แม้จะมีการผสมผสานวัฒนธรรมของแต่ละประเทศ แต่เอกลักษณ์ก็ที่บ่งบอกถึงสไตล์เมดิเตอร์เนียนก็คือความอบอุ่นและสดใส ที่แสดงออกมาบนพื้นผิวความเป็นธรรมชาติของวัสดุ ที่มีความกลมกลืนไป กับธรรมชาติในแถบทะเลเมดิเตอร์เนียน จะสังเกตได้ว่าความหนาของพนังทั้ง 4ด้านที่โอบล้อมคอร์ตกกลางบ้านนั้น ก็เพื่อป้องกันแสงแดดในหน้าร้อน และให้ความอบอุ่นในหน้าหนาว ส่วนคอร์ตกลางบ้านจะมอบความร่มรื่นและสดชื่นให้กับบ้าน

ลักษณะเด่นของสไตล์เมดิเตอร์เนียนคือ สีสันบนผนังบ้านที่ให้ความรู้สึกสดใส ซึ่งแตกต่างกับในแถบประเทศที่ตั้งอยู่บริเวณทะเลเมดิเตอร์เนียน เช่น กรีซที่เน้นสีขาวตัดตัดกับสีฟ้าของน้ำทะเลอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ส่วนอิตาลีก็จะมีลักษณะโทนสีอมส้มของกระเบื้องมุงหลังคา หรือไม่ก็เป็นสีของหินธรรมชาติ มีการปูพื้นด้วนหินธรรมชาติ หรือไม่ก็กระเบื้องดินเผา ที่สลับกับกระเบื้องเขียนลาย ซึ่งบางส่วนมีการใช้กระเบื้องโมเสกเขียนลายอันมีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะผืนประดับตกแต่งผนังและการนำผ้าที่ทอลวดลายแบบพื้นถิ่นมาใช้ในการตกแต่งและเสน่ห์ของการตกแต่งสไตล์เมดิเตอร์เนียนที่ดูโดดเด่นก็คือ บริเวณที่พักผ่อนภายนอก หรือ Outdoor Living มักมีระแนงบังแดดที่ต่อออกจากตัวผนังบ้าน ใช้ไม้ธรรมชาติ แสงที่ลอดส่องผ่านลงมาเป็นเงากระทบกับผนัง เฟอร์นิเจอร์จากไม้ดิบๆหุ้มด้วยผ้าที่มี Texture กับบางส่วนที่ใช้หวายมาสานขึ้นรูปให้รูปลวดลายอ่อนหวาน Mediterranean style จึงเป็นอีกรูปแบบที่มีเอกลักษณ์ มีความเป็นธรรมชาติ และกลมกลืน

แนวทางการตกแต่งแบบ Mediterranean style อย่างแรกที่ต้องนึกถึงคือการปรับผนังเดิมด้วยการฉาบแบบไม่เรียบ ปรับเปลี่ยนพื้นภายในห้องเป็นดินเผาธรรมชาติ หรือกระเบื้องที่มีลักษณะคล้ายหิน ปรับช่องหน้าต่าง หรือเพิ่มให้แสงเข้ามาภายในเพื่อช่วยเสริมสร้างบรรยากาศ เครื่องเรือนไม้ลักษณะแฮนด์เมดเสริมด้วยพรมที่ทำจากวัสดุประเภทปอถัก และจานเพ้นต์ เข้ากันได้ดีกับสไตล์นี้

Mediterranean is the style of the south of Europe, the land around and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Countries in this region and have a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea are Spain, Italy, Greece, South of France, etc. These Countries also individually have their own styles which vary regionally. Yet the Mediterranean characteristics are warmth, friendliness and brightness that are displayed by natural texture materials harmonizing with local environment. Noticeably, four-side walls surrounding central courts are quite thick. This is to protect sunlight in summer and keep the places warm in winter. Apart from these, it can create pleasant and calm atmosphere.

The key feature of Mediterranean style is colouring which differs according to the regions. We will find that Greeks mainly  use blue colour contrasting with white colour. While in ltaly, there are plenty of orangish ceiling tiles tones or in natural-stone colours. Natural stones or earth tiles alternated with painted tiles are used for flooring. Walls may be decorated with mosaic tiles with unique patterns or with native-motif woven fabrics. Another characteristic of this style is to have louver windows which are additionally expanded in outdoor living areas. The louver thing will create shade and shadow on walls. Rustic-wood furniture and textural upholstery fabric as well as sweet-pattan furniture are part of Mediterranean style decoration where nature meets ways of life.  

The very first things we should bear in mind are that how to adjust existing  conditions of places to be in Mediterranean style i.e. to places to have uneven plastering walls, to have natural clay or stone-like tile floors, to adjust windows to let more light in. Thai is to improve an atmosphere of the places. Additionally, hand-made wood furniture accompanied by painted potteries and wicker carpets can enhance the decoration.
