Sino-Portuguese (ชิโน-โปรตุกีส) อาจจะเป็นสไตล์ที่ไม่ค่อยได้ยินมากนักสำหรับการตกแต่งบ้าน สถาปัตย์แบบ Sino-Portuguese นั้นได้รับอิทธิพลจากหลากหลายเชื้อชาติมาผสมผสานกับวิถีและวัฒนธรรม เริ่มจากชาวจีนที่มาตั้งรกราก และค้าขายที่มะละกา ประเทศมาเลเซีย เมื่อชาวตะวันตกเข้ามามีอิทธิพล ซึ่งชาวยุโรปที่มาก่อนนั้น คือชาวโปรตุกีส ซึ่งเกิดการนำเอาสถาปัตยกรรมแบบยุโรปมาผสมกับจีน จนเรียกขานกันว่า ชิโน-โปรตุกีส  แถบเอเชียที่มีสไตล์นี้คือ มะละกา มาเก๊า อินโดนีเซีย สิงคโปร์ ปีนัง และทางตอนใต้ของประเทศไทย คือภูเก็ต ที่มีหลงเหลือให้เห็น ลักษณะงานของชิโน-โปรตุกีส เป็นอาคารรูปทรงแบบยุโรป มีบัวปูนปั้นแบบยุโรป ช่องบานเปิดของหน้าต่างที่ผสมผสานยุโรปกับจีนเอาไว้ในเรื่องของลวดลายการแสลักประตูแบบจีน และช่องระบายอากาศที่มีเอกลักษณ์ความเป็นจีนผสมอยู่ภายในมักมีคอร์ตอยู่กลางบ้าน และมีแสงธรรมชาติลอดผ่านเข้ามา พื้นใช้วัสดุระหว่างกระเบื้องซีกรีต (กระเบื้องซีเมนต์พิมพ์ลาย) กับหินอ่อน กระเบื้องซีกรีตเป็นเอกลักษณ์ที่เด่นมาในการตกแต่งแบบชิโน-โปรตุกีส ส่วนผนังบางส่วนมีการตกแต่งด้วยกระเบื้องเคลือบแบบเซรามิกซึ่งปัจจุบันหาดูได้ยาก เนื่องจากกาลเวลาที่มีการแตกหักและเสียหาย ส่วนเครื่องเรือนจะผสมกันระหว่างเฟอร์นิเจอร์แบบ Chinese style กับแบบยุโรป Sino-Portuguese กับแบบยุโรป Sino-Portuguese style จึงมีรูปแบบและเอกลักษณ์ที่เฉพาะตัว มีเสน่ห์และบ่งบอกถึงเรื่องราวของประวัติศาสตร์ กาลเวลา และวัฒนธรรมได้

แนวทางการตกแต่งแบบ Sino-Portuguese style เป็นการเลือกเครื่องเรือนผสมระหว่างแบบยุโรปแบบจีน ซึ่งเลือกทรงที่มีลักษณะร่วมสมัย การตกแต่งกรอบซุ้มประตู-หน้าต่างแบบยุโรปแต่ใช้บานแบบจีน ผนังบางส่วนตกแต่งด้วยกระเบื้องเคลือบลายเลียนแบบกระเบื้องโบราณ โคมไฟรมดำโปะแก้วแบบดัตช์ การประดับตกแต่งด้วยโถ ชาม Blue and White และพรมเปอร์เซีย ซึ่งลวดลายของกระเบื้องและไม้ฉลุนั้น บางที่จะมีลวดลายแบบผสมฟ้า-ขาว ซึ่งผสมกันระหว่างอิสลามกับโปรตุเกส

Sino-Portuguese may not be a very well-know style to interior designers. The style is influenced by various countries and their cultural ways. The thing began with ancient Chinese people who settled in Malaysia as merchants until the Westerners later arrived. Portugal was the first nation coming to this region. This is the starting point of the combination of European architecture and Chinese architecture as called ‘Sino-Portuguese’ which still can be found in Malaya, Macau, lndonesia, Singapore, Penang and Phuket in the southern part of Thailand The characteristics of  Sino-Portuguese are to have ways of European buildings such as label stops with a cornice, window shutters and ventilators where European wood carving meets Chinese wood carving, a central courtyard in places that lets sunlight in, floors with cecrete tiles and marble. The cecrete tiles, printed cement tiles. are the outstanding feature of this style. Walls partially are decorated with ceramic tiles which are rarely found recently as they fell into ruin as time went by. The places can be furnished by Chinese-Style and European-style furniture. Sino-Portuguese therefore is a uniquely attractive decoration style narrating history, periods of time and culture.

As  Sino-Portuguese is the way combining Chinese style and European style furniture, the crucial thing is how to make a good choice of furniture. In this case, I would suggest furniture in Contemporary style i.e. Chinese folding doors and windows with a European-style arch: panels partially decorated with porcelain tiles with imitated antique motifs; metal  blackened lamps with Dutch-like lampshades; potteries in blue and white colour used as props and Persian carpets. The patterns on tiles and white colour too as it shows the combination of lslamic culture and Portuguese culture.
